Cowcher claims his first ever city win

Gary Cowcher trained his first ever city winner at Sandown Park last night.

The achievement is always a special one for anyone involved in the sport and for Cowcher it comes just two years into his training career.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to get a city win. Especially with a greyhound of my own that I bred and educated myself,” said Cowcher with pride.

He has been involved in greyhound racing for seven years, though only recently decided to take up the training caper.

“I worked with a man who had trotters and I was thinking about getting one, and then I thought I like dogs and I’ve got the background in breeding show dogs. I thought I’d give it a crack and found out it wasn’t that hard after all.”

Last night’s win was courtesy of Ruby Girl who is just one of two racing greyhounds at Cowcher’s property in Broadford. Despite the small team there is a small army of supporters behind them.

“Everyone at the local pub gets involved, I’ve got a bit of a following with these dogs. They all want to buy a back leg or a front leg, nothing’s for sale,” he laughed.
