Often Imitated brutal on path to McKenna

Often Imitated has reminded everyone how brilliant she can be with an explosive win at Sandown Park last night.

She jumped from box 6 which in the lead up seemed an awkward draw on paper, however a handful of scratchings led to a small field of five that played in her favour.

After a relatively unimpeded run through the first turn she loomed a serious threat as she settled just a length off the leaders as they entered the back straight.

She exploded away to win in a hot time of 29.35 with a sensational run home split of 10.38 – resembling the quality of her famous mum and champion stayer Sweet It Is.

“It was encouraging to see her do that. I think the small field helped her, though her splits were quite good,” said trainer Jackie Greenough moments after the win.

Often Imitated, known as ‘Sally’ away from the track, stepped up in distance successfully earlier in the month however dropped back to the sprint trip last night.

“She pulled up a little bit rough after her ‘600’ here, she was rushed into a bit so we decided to drop her back and build her up slowly.”

Greenough went on to say that next month’s McKenna Memorial heats are high on the agenda.

Heats of the McKenna Memorial (595m) will be run on Thursday July 4.
