Sandown Greyhound Racing Club

Sandown Greyhound Racing Club in the community

Greyhound racing in Springvale dates back to 1935. The Sandown Greyhound Racing was formed early in 1956 and commenced racing on 8 September 1956.

Today the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club is a community focused club which draws many of its attendees from the local area. It is home to the Henry Harrison Grandstand, one of the world’s best-appointed facilities for enjoying greyhound racing, with a range of function rooms for social and business events.

The club hosts around 1,200 races annually over 515, 595 and 715 metres, including the world’s richest greyhound race, the $630,000 Melbourne Cup. Other feature events include the Sandown Cup, the Shootout, the Launching Pad and the Speed Star.

The Club directly employs 130 staff and supports local businesses and suppliers through the provision of goods and services to the Club. Greyhound racing contributes more than $230 million annually to the Melbourne Metro area, including $8.5 million in the City of Greater Dandenong alone.

The Sandown Park Greyhound Racing Club manages its operations with the community in mind, and hosts many events to support charitable and local causes, and to give local groups and residents opportunities to meet, raise funds and enjoy themselves.

Organisations supported by the Club include:

  • Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP)
  • The Royal Children’s Hospital
  • The Noble Park Football Social & Business Club
  • Salesian Missions
  • Monash Health
  • The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia
  • My Room
  • The Leukaemia Foundation
  • Reaching Out Because We Can (ROBWC)
  • Servants of the Two Hearts (SOTH)

The Club also sponsors local sporting teams including:

  • The Southern Football and Netball League
  • The Dandenong & District Cricket Association
  • Sandown Cobras Football Club

Sandown is also a proud supporter of GRV community initiatives including The Great Chase

We work with two charity groups – Reaching Out Because We Can (ROBWC) and Servants of the Two Hearts (SOTH), dedicating our efforts to assist local community groups in feeding those in need. Meals will be provided to local community groups located within the City of Greater Dandenong.
