Speed Star to return this August

Speed Star has been scheduled at Sandown Park for Wednesday August 23.

It will be the first edition of the match-racing event since May 2022 which was run in a reduced format – won by Wow She’s Fast.

The upcoming series is up the alley of Speed Star’s halcyon days with 12 match races spanning over three events – six over 515m, four over 595m and two over 715m.

“It’s the sport’s most popular format of racing and we’re aware of its demand. Sandown Park has been the home of match racing since Speed Star’s inception and we’re excited for the upcoming edition,” said Neil Brown, Chairman of Sandown Greyhounds.

Each match will be its own ‘race’ making up a traditional 12 race program. It will make it easier for punters to discover the matches in their respective apps and bet on.

This edition will carry over $140,000 in prize money.

Speed Star will complement an already significant week of racing in Victoria. The National Sprint & Distance will highlight racing at The Meadows on the Saturday, National Straight Track Championship at Healesville that morning and the 150th running of the Waterloo Cup at Lang Lang coursing on Sunday.

“It’s certainly going to be a big week for greyhound racing. We thank GRV for their support of Speed Star.”

Greyhounds will qualify on times run between Thursday June 1 and Sunday August 20. Qualification trials will be available during race meetings between Thursday July 13 and Sunday August 20. Current standings will be published next week.
