First city winner for Portelli

Another Easy gave Jason Portelli his first city winner with his first city grade starter at Sandown Park tonight.

Portelli, 29, got his trainers license in 2010 but only trained for a few months after his first starter in March of that year. He had owned a few in the interim however with work slowing due to COVID, decided to give training another go.

Portelli purchased Another Easy as a 13 month old pup in March and made his debut in September before finally breaking through for his maiden win at Sandown – Portelli’s first at Sandown Park – on Sunday.

“It took him 8 starts to break through,” he said.

“He’d run second four times, and we ran into a few dogs running 29.50s here, but we stuck to the plan.

“He’s only 22 months old and is such a hard chaser. He tries his best every week.”

Another Easy is one of a small team of greyhounds trained by Portelli from his home in Keilor Park.

“It’s good to a win at Sandown. I’ve been watching dogs for years and to get one here and get the victory is a real thrill.

“We just love the dogs – they live in the backyard and they’ll be homed with us when we’re done.”

It was a good night for small kennels. Following Portelli’s first city win, Monique Whelan won her second Sandown city race with Lakeview Walter in race 2, and Helen Eyles her fourth Sandown city win with Kraken Doll in race 3. Later on the card, Adam Richardson won his third Sandown city win with Mepunga Isla.
