Fast5 – May the fourth edition

Big news in the Speed Star, a big moment in Sandown Cup history, and a chance to win big just by proving how well you know your dogs. That and more in today’s Fast5

1. On this day…
The great Bold Trease won his FOURTH consecutive Sandown Cup. It’s a feat that will never be matched not just in greyhound racing, but in any code in any race anywhere in the world. There’ll be plenty more on the ‘Warrnambool Warrior’ leading in to the Sandown Cup in the weeks ahead, but for now, check out Roy’s amazing come-from-last win in the 1989 Sandown Cup!

2. Blazing Blazer
Mepunga Blazer (race 9 box 8) appreciated the drop in class when he scorched around Sandown Park last Sunday in 29.27. He can be a bit tardy out of the boxes and tends to make his own trouble at the first turn, but what a motor he has! He’s currently 4th on the Bill Collins Speed Star leader board but don’t be surprised to see him move up the leader board with a clear run tonight.

3. Hey Mumbo
Black Mumbo (race 8 box 7) boats a 29.37 best winning time at Sandown Park but his best time is actually 29.317 recorded when second behind Worm Burner in the Easter Gift. That’s good enough for 8th on the Bill Collins Speed Star leader board, but given he has recorded 29.73 at the Meadows from box 7, don’t be surprised if he’s another that moves up the standings.

4. Miles in the legs
It was built as a quasi-match race between Fanta Bale and Dundee Osprey last week, but Dundee Calyspo upstaged the pair of them in the grade 5 final last week. There’s a long held theory that greyhounds can struggle second up over the staying trip (‘second up syndrome’) but that was never going to apply to Dundee Calyso. From 11 starts over distances of 699m or move, Dundee Calypso has built an solid 3-2-3 record but perhaps even more impressive is the fact that he’s improved his time over 715m at Sandown in each of his five starts, from 42.49 at her distance debut down to 41.74 last Thursday night. He jumps from box 2 in race 6 tonight.

5. Son of a gun
Former super star My Bro Fabio has his first Sandown Park city starter as sire tonight when Paradiso Lass lines up in race 1 (box 4). He is in fact the first and only My Bro Fabio’s progeny on track (as far as his stud master Brook Ennis can tell) having just turned 20 months of age. He won on his debut at The Meadows and ran a solid second here last Sunday.

Bill Collins Speed Star update
Big news in the Speed Star – Aston Dee Bee and Nature’s Gent are now likely nominations! Aston Dee Bee broke the Bulli track record last week and will line up at Maitland tonight. He currently sits second on the leader board with a stunning time of 29.188!

The final Bill Collins Speed Star trial session will be held this Sunday. Headlining the triallers is three-time group 1 winner Fanta Bale, and all trials will streamed live on our Twitter (@sandowndogs).
