It’s A mighty comeback

On Thursday night It’s A Plane snared his first win since November 2015.

It was one that produced flashbacks of his barnstorming wins early in his career. Virtually last turning for home, It’s A Plane stunned onlookers as he gave his rivals windburn in the run to the line.

“It was so exciting to see him storming home. He’d hadn’t been trialling as well as we hoped. To see him charging home like he did gives us the impression he still wants to race. It was exciting to see him back to his old ways, let alone back in the winners circle,” said Karen Pitt, partner of trainer Wayne Vassallo.

It was his second start back after being kept off the racing scene since December 2015 with troublesome toe injury.

“He had toe issues. He ended up having to have his toe amputated. We weren’t sure if he was going to be able to make it back to the track. He was close to being retired.

“We’ve had a few setbacks along the way. Losing a part of his anatomy is something he’s had to get used to.”

It’s A Plane is not only appreciated for his ability on-track as he is “part of the furniture” at the Devon Meadows kennel.

“He’s a special dog to us, not just because of his ability but he’s such a special animal – we adore him.

“He’s the type that doesn’t like being around other race dogs as he loves to go racing.”

The kennel is optimistic of It’s A Plane’s chances of heading to next month’s RSN Sandown Cup, the world’s richest staying race.

“Hopefully. We don’t think he’s the dog he once was. We’ll just find the races he’s suitable for and aim for the feature events, but if he doesn’t reach those heights we’re just happy to see him go around.”
