Shima Song stakes her claim for Speed Star

Shima Song staked her claim for Speed Star last Thursday night with a brilliant 29.296 victory.

Owned by Sandown Greyhound Racing Club director, David Gleeson and friend of 30 years Bob Cummings, Shima Song sprung out of box 6 and never looked back going on to win by an increasing 7 lengths.

Shima Song’s time rocketed her to the pointy end of the Speed Star leader board – all but cementing a spot in the series.

“I didn’t even think that she’d head to Speed Star or even look like heading to the series.

“When you breed an exciting dog that’s a real professional you get an absolute buzz out of seeing her run and display that sort of ability,” said Gleeson.

Shima Song would arguably be better suited to racing over the metropolitan middle distances but plans for that have been halted due to intentions to compete in the world’s richest greyhound race.

“I spoke with Tom Dailly about her running over further distances – we might put those plans on hold and keep her racing over the sprint until the Melbourne Cup.”

Gleeson hopes Shima Song can reach the heights of her mother, Shimaguni, a group winner who he also owned.

“She’s such a professional dog, I can only hope she has as much success as her mother did.”

Jesaulenko and Dundee Osprey trialed for the series yesterday and both inserted their name into the top 10. Click here for more information.
