Greyhound Community Fund helps kids keep cool this summer

Pupils at Wallarano Primary School will escape the heat this summer thanks in part to a grant from the Greyhound Community Fund.

In October Wallarano Primary School received a $3000 grant from the Fund which it used to provide entertainment at their bi-annual fete. The fete proved an outstanding success.

“We used the money from the grant to help fund the school’s fete, which in turn enabled us to raise enough money to allow us to provide air conditioning in our new buildings,” said fundraising coordinator Debra Arztenhofer who was instrumental in organising the fete.

“In the past if we had three or four hot days in a row the heat wouldn’t dissipate and it would just get hotter and hotter as the day wore on. It wasn’t very good for the children and their learning because they were so hot from the moment they arrived and couldn’t keep their attention. It was so bad at times that there were parents who would pick their kids up at lunch time because it was just too hot.

“Now, the rooms are much more comfortable which obviously greatly benefits the children and staff.”

Chairman of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, Mr Geoff Dawson, was proud to have been able to support the school to improve the learning environment for local children.

“The Wallarano Primary School is a very impressive facility,” he said after being given a tour of the school.

“We are happy to be able to provide assistance to the school community and we’re glad that it has made a real difference for the kids.”

The Greyhound Community Fund is a joint venture between the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club and Greyhounds Entertainment. Funding is available to non profit organisations that provide quality programming in the areas of health, recreation and community events and festivals that benefit the community in the City of Greater Dandenong.

Organisations to have benefitted from the fund include the Rotary Club of Noble Park, Multiple Sclerosis, Springvale Learning and Activity Centre, Dandenong West Community Hub, 3rd Noble Park Scout Group, Keysborough Cricket Club and South Eastern Legacy Group.

Applications for the Fund are now open, click here for application details or contact Tammy on 9546 9511.
