Sandown Cup heats released


Australia’s leading stayers will converge on Sandown Park on Thursday night for the heats of the world’s richest staying race, the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup.

With runners combining for almost $2.5m in prize money, the 2014 RSN Sandown Cup promises to be one of the most even in the event’s 50 year history.

Recent Group 1 Galaxy winner Born Ali headlines the opening heat of the night where she’ll come up against the youngest greyhound in the series, Heaps Of Ability which boasts the fastest winning time this track and distance of any dog in the series at 41.69.

The second heat sees Cheetah Zorro, already a Group 1 winner at the track following his Bold Trease win last November, take on exciting kiwi Know Class which scored a thrilling last-stride victory at the track last week.

The third heat sees a mouth watering clash between recent Rocky Bale and Sweet It Is. The pair last met on May 1 in the Group 3 Lizrene at Sandown Park with Rocky Bale holding out the fast finishing Sweet It Is by four lengths.

Xylia Allen, the reigning Victorian Greyhound of the Year, will jump five in the final heat of the evening as she attempts to reach her 20th Group race final. She is no stranger to the yellow vest, having worn it 13 times in her 63 race career including wins in the Shootout and Launceston Cup.

The winner and runner up from each heat will progress to the $250,000 final on Thursday 22 May. The box draw will be conducted live on RSN on Monday 19 May.

The RSN Sandown Cup heats compliment an outstanding night’s racing, highlighted by the finals of the $145,000 Group 1 Macro Meats Sapphire Crown, and the $145,000 Group 2 Berwick Mazda Harrison-Dawson.

TAB has guaranteed a $10,000 First Four pool on each event on Thursday night.

The box draw for the 2014 RSN Sandown Cup will be conducted live on RSN Racing & Sport on Monday May 19 from 8am.
