Little bit of Magic

Star Queenslander Metz Magic claimed Sandown Park’s first feature race of 2013 with a devastating win in the Maidment Memorial tonight.

Drawn ideally in box 1, Metz Magic ($3.70) began well to trial Proven Impala ($4.80) through the first turn with dual Sandown Park Group race winner and favourite Irma Bale($3) well placed on their outside.

Leaving the straight, Metz Magic switched to the outside and began to reel in Proven Impala. The 2011 National Sprint Champion found the lead coming off the back straight and powered away to win by an increasing 7.5 lengths in a smart 34.10 seconds.

Proven Impala had no answer in second place, while Irma Bale held off Bagget Bale and Gomes for third.

Trained by Ron Ball for Bill Crooks, the win was Metz Magic’s 18 of his career and the $15,000 first prize took his career prize money to $154,142.

The son of Bombastic Shiraz will now target the Group 1 Rookie Rebel at The Meadows on Saturday 16 February.
