A big chance for the People

Part owner Ryan Levitzke believes that We The People is a strong place chance in tonight’s RSN Sandown Cup.

The Western Australian stayer came from neat last to finish second to Kenny The Brute in her heat last week, and Levitzke believes her racing pattern is suited to the Sandown circuit.

“To be blunt, Cannington is a track where it’s hard to come from behind but Sandown is the opposite,” he said.

“She’s a very slow beginner – she’s clueless early – she’ll drop out the back but at Sandown I’m confident that with a bit of luck she’ll be on the podium.”

We The People has steadily improved her box manners in each of her three starts for caretaker trainer Brooke Ennis. She has drawn box 2 for tonight’s $250,000 final with fellow sandgroper and race favourite Zack Monelli drawn inside her, setting up a rematch between the recent group 1 Galaxy which saw Zack Monelli defeat We The People by four lengths.

“I don’t think it (the box) matters to be honest. It helps that none of the well credentialed greyhounds have got it but she’ll just flop out the back like the old galloper Telesto, just right out the back and hope for runs.

“I think there’s probably five lengths between them if they had a match race. Zack Monelli is the favourite, he’s got the red but it’s a group 1. I don’t really know the opposition, but I’m tipping there’s some guns that will put the pressure on Zack early.”

Making the world’s premier distance race continues We The People’s remarkable rise and is a credit to trainer Sean Kavanagh’s eye for talent. The greyhound was purchased after winning just two of her first 20 starts in New South Wales and has since won eight of her next 28 starts – with 13 minor placings – since making the move west.

“Sean identified We The People as a decent stayer to pick up. He rarely says to go in a dog with us, so when he does we jumped and I’m glad we did.”

The RSN Sandown Cup will jump at 8.28pm.
