Stars from the West to trial this week

Powerful Western Australian duo Sunset Spitfire and Zack Monelli (pictured with David Hobby) will trial at Sandown Park this week in preparation for the Harrison-Dawson and RSN Sandown Cup respectively.

Sunset Spitfire will trial between races over 515m this Thursday night while Zack Monelli is set to kick off Speed Star trials with a bang this Sunday over 595m.

The pair will arrive in Melbourne tonight and be picked up by care-taker trainer Lyn Smith.

“The timing of Thursday’s trial (for Sunset Spitfire) will work well being a week out from the heats of the Harrison-Dawson,” said Smith.

There will be plenty of attention surrounding the trial. In December he set a frightening 29.52 (5.00, 17.46) at The Meadows in preparation for the Silver Chief.

On Saturday he maintained his undefeated record at Cannington defeating local hero Tommy Shleby in a battle billed as a match race between the two local stars. It was Tommy Shelby’s first race at his home track since September last year and will be joining Sunset Spitfire in the Harrison-Dawson series.

The two Western Australians are equal $8 favourites for the Harrison-Dawson with TAB.

Sunset Spitfire will trial after Race 1 this Thursday and streamed via @sandowndogs.

Zack Monelli’s hitout on Sunday will mainly be in preparation for the RSN Sandown Cup heats on May 20 but also to hopefully set a competitive time on the 595m Speed Star standings.

The slot for Zack Monelli’s trial on Sunday will be determined on Friday. Stayed tuned for that plus announcements of any others who will be trialling on the day.
