Australia’s number one greyhound Tommy Shelby has the crosshairs on next month’s Harrison-Dawson at Sandown Park.
The Golden Easter Egg winner recently had a trial on his home deck at Cannington and set a blinding time of 29.35 (track record 29.26 held by Campini).
“Before we went to Sydney for the Egg he trialled 5.40 and 18.10, he went 5.34 and 18.08 on Thursday morning with both sections inside half a length of the records,” said trainer Steve Withers.
With the short break in Tommy’s schedule it has allowed stud duties to commence.
“We’ve been fulfilling requirements to become a registered sire which is now complete. He’s been drawn from a couple of times and we weren’t sure if it would have a negative impact.
“Next step is to try him in a full field after drawing and see if he maintains his attitude to racing. If all is well we will head to Melbourne for the Harrison-Dawson. Ideally we will blend stud life with racing for the next six months.
“We’re keen to be a part of Speed Star too but we’ll see how everything plays out.”
Heats of the Harrison-Dawson (male sprinters) and Sapphire Crown (female sprinters) will be run on Thursday May 13 while Speed Star is set for Wednesday June 2.
