It’s TAB Melbourne Cup heats night, considered by many to be the best night of greyhound racing anywhere in the world.
And it’s not hard to see why. There will be 11 group 1 heats run across the card (eight TAB Melbourne Cup and three Bold Trease) with the runners combining for over 1000 wins and almost $9.5m in prize money. There are 19 individual group race winners engaged and the depth is such that each heat is worthy of a group race in its own right.
It truly is a treat for greyhound racing fans, and punters have already made a move. Or moves in some cases.
The country’s top ranked greyhound Simon Told Helen had been favourite for the world’s greatest greyhound race since markets opened however his 294 day reign as punters elect ended yesterday when support came for TAB Topgun winner Shima Shine. TAB Million Dollar Chase winner has also been well supported and now shares the second line of betting with Simon Told Helen.
In the heats, Aston Silk (pictured above) has seen her price slashed from $6 into $2.70. Significantly, her trainer (and three time TAB Melbourne Cup winner) Jason Thompson told RSN Racing and Sport that said Aston Silk was the best of his seven chances across the night, while kennel mate Aussies Secret has also firmed from $8 to $5.50. In race 6, Arizona Eyes ($10 to $5.50) and Bobby The Brute ($12 to $5.50) from Robert Britton and Brendan Pursell respectively have also been well supported.
