Lanigan says Weblec Eagle is Cup bound

Weblec Eagle is RSN Sandown Cup bound after a classy win last night at Sandown Park.

It was his first win for 10 starts with the last in January over 715m at Sandown Park – first up after his Sale Cup win.

“I was tempted to step him up (to 715m) tonight but decided against it. Soon I will and he’ll be heading towards the Sandown Cup,” explained Lanigan.

Details of Sandown Park’s feature events in May were announced on Wednesday, it includes a ‘Best 8’ on May 7 over 715m that could be a target for Lanigan in the lead up to the world’s highest regarded staying race – click here for full schedule.

Recent addition to the staying ranks Mister Harlerwood is favourite with TAB for the RSN Sandown Cup, while Weblec Eagle is rated a $26 chance – click here for full market.

Later in the night Lanigan completed a double with Vivatar. The win was considered a miracle by some – it was the first time Lanigan had drawn box 1 at Sandown Park for 65 starts.

We hold around four meetings a year on Friday nights, and Lanigan’s last four winners in red have come on Fridays. A case of TGIF for the 27-year-old trainer! Click here for more on his red box hiatus.
