Brothers partner up for city success

Daryl Weightman claimed the biggest win of his short training career on Thursday night.

It was courtesy of Hooked On You who is owned by Weightman’s brother Les. They combined to take out the night’s Grade 5 final by 2¼ lengths.

“We’re proud of him. It’s the best win we’ve had, first city win too!” said Weightman.

“I’ve raced a few times at Sandown but I’ve mostly travelled in the country. It was good to see them put on this series for this type of greyhound and trainer.”

Weightman’s first win in town comes just two years into his training career. He owned greyhounds prior but decided to take up the collar and lead after he started working at a transport company.

“I used to have shares in greyhounds with someone else training them for me, then I decided to do it myself when I got a job that gave me some time to do it.”

Weightman is based at Dean which is just over 20km out of Ballarat. Hooked On You is one of just three racing greyhounds in his kennel.

“We saw him up for sale on the internet, we watched his first few starts and didn’t think they were too bad. So we thought we’d buy him, we didn’t expect him to go this good but he has improved.”

Earlier in the night a $600 purchase turned into a $5280 return for trainer Tony Duncan after Dashing Dino scored a upset at odds of $81. Click here for the full story
