Dyna’s Chance

Brilliant youngster Dyna Chancer sensationally rocketed to the top of the Racecallers Speed Star leader board with a brilliant win in 33.883 over 595m at Sandown Park last night.

The win was the fastest time recorded for the distance in 2018, launching the son of Melbourne Cup winner Dyna Double One to the top ranking for the $25,000 match race series.

His trainer, Correy Grenfell was delighted with his charge’s run. After an unsuccessful Queensland Derby campaign, he returned to Victoria to record a slick 29.81 win at The Meadows before stepping up in distance.

“He had some problems after a run at the Meadows in March and didn’t have much luck up north so it’s great to see him back to his best,” he said.

“We’ve had plans for him to step up in distance, we’ll be back next week for sure.”

Fast times were the order of the night in the unseasonably warm and windy conditions which saw several changes to the standings over all three distances.

Early in the night, My Redeemer had tongues wagging when he stopped the clock in 29.123 over the 515m, good for second place in the Bill Collins Speed Star standings. A younger half brother to the brilliant triple group 1 winner Up Hill Jill, the win was the fifth on the bounce for the David Geall trained speedster. Maurice Minor, who was beaten by a length, moved into 6th place with his 29.202 gallop.

Meanwhile, star New South Wales stayer Simon Keeping booked his place in the Lizrene Speed Star when he trialled in 41.712 over the 715m. His time was good enough for 4th place but was bettered less than an hour later when Barcali eclipsed his time by just 0.003 of second.

The Speed Star is greyhound racing’s newest and most exciting format, bringing together 40 of Australia’s fastest greyhounds to race for $190,000 in prize money in a series of head to head match races. Greyhounds qualify for the series based on their best times at the track since 1 January.

The final opportunity for greyhounds to qualify is this Sunday. Nominations close at 9am on Tuesday with final match ups released soon after.
