Garrett aiming for Launching Pad clean sweep

Dawn Garrett is well positioned to claim both Launching Pad feature races this Thursday night.

She owns Beast Unleashed and Zipping Kelly (pictured with Garrett and Peter Lagogiane) who have both drawn box 1 in the $210,000 Launching Pad final and consolation final respectively.

Zipping Kelly was a last minute nomination for the $410,000 series as a entry ticket became available when youngster Binions went amiss in the series lead up.

“It was a last minute thing because they (trainers Peter and Jodie Lagogiane) had an extra ticket, Binions was unfortunately injured so they asked if I wanted to put her (Zipping Kelly) in,” explained Garrett.

Zipping Kelly produced a huge performance in her Consolation heat last Thursday night. She was last early and made up a considerable amount of ground to win.

“We know she’s not totally suited to ‘500’ as she looks to be a promising stayer. I thought we might as well, since we’ve got the opportunity. Now she’s in the consolation final, so it’s worked out pretty well.”

Garrett purchased Zipping Kelly off the highly respected Hallinan family after some impressive runs at Richmond that caught her eye.

“I saw her first couple of starts over ‘500’ at Richmond, she then she won two over ‘600’ there. She’s very strong and that’s what I was looking for, a good stayer. I also liked her breeding, so I put an offer and luckily they accepted.

“I got an inheritance so I thought ‘well, I could buy myself a nice dog.’ She (Zipping Kelly) just happened to come along at the time.

“Unfortunately she had bad tonsillitis and the infection went through her body. We had to get them taken out, then give her time to recover from that.”

Her other runner in the series Beast Unleashed is quickly becoming very popular among punters and fans. He is likely to start favourite in the Launching Pad final and if successful will be his fifth straight win.

Garrett spent years training greyhounds, most well known being Tears Siam, Zsa Zsa and the hugely talented Space Star early in his career. She also trained and owned Little Egyptian, who produced former Wentworth Park track record holder Punch One Out.

“I’ve stepped away from training in recent years. I’m just happy to have a couple of dogs with Peter and Jodie. I don’t have to worry about all the hard work,” laughed Garrett.

“I was based in Victoria for about 12 months. I moved back to New South Wales two years ago, my dad was really sick so I wanted to be closer to him.”

The group 2 Launching Pad final, Consolation final and group 3 Easter Gift will headline action on the track this Thursday. While off the track the night is highlighted by the club’s annual Easter Kids Fun Night – click here for more information.
