Chasin’ Crackers staying campaign imminent

Chasin’ Crackers is on the verge of a staying campaign following a very impressive win on Thursday night.

Chasin’ Crackers began well before embarking on a pursuit of leaders Vostok and Inequity. He rounded them up on the home bend and ran on strongly to win by 2½ lengths in a very sharp 34.14. His trainer Glenn Rounds was delighted with the performance.

“I wasn’t sure if he was capable of running low 34’s (seconds) – it was an excellent run. We’re planning for him to be a stayer, the way he took off in the last 50 or so metres gives us confidence he’ll handle more ground,” said Rounds.

The win was his first from two attempts over Sandown’s 595m. Given the way he finished off Rounds has imminent plans to step up Chasin Crackers in distance.

“I think he was looking for further on the line. I’ll think about it for a couple of days whether we go over the middle distance again or look for a 650m or so race.”

Rounds had the option to take Chasin’ Crackers to Angle Park on Thursday for heats of the Adelaide Derby however decided against going down the path.

Chasin’ Crackers has only missed placing in six of his 26 career starts. Rounds says that Chasin’ Crackers has always showed great ability even from a very young age.

“I got him when he was a baby, broke him in and it wasn’t long before he improved with leaps and bounds.”

“I sort of threw him in the deep end, I took him to tracks with race dogs and trailed him with them. When he ran under lights for the first time he went super and I thought geez this dog has come along real fast, and that’s exactly what he’s continued to do, he’s become a real nice race dog.”

Owned by good friend David Carrol, Rounds says that Chasin’ Crackers is a pleasure to have around at home.

“He’s a very affectionate dog, he looks for you all the time – he’s a real nice dog to have around.”

Chasin’ Crackers’ win was one of a handful of highlights from Thursday night, including fast runs from Aston Dee Bee and Matt Machine. Click here for full results.
