Buccillis excited with two in Speed Star

Cousins Serg and Bill Buccilli are excited as anyone ahead of tomorrow night’s Bill Collins Speed Star with ownership of two greyhounds engaged.

One of those is recent Warrnambool Classic winner Bewildering, who put together an ultra impressive trial (29.175 YouTube-icon-full_colorsml) on Sunday to force his way into the series.

“It was an impressive trial. The conditions didn’t exactly suit as there was a lot of rain in the morning. He really impressed us,” said Serg on RSN’s Racing Ahead.

Following Sunday’s draw Bewildering was set to face kennelmate Worm Burner in a much anticipated clash. Unfortunately, Worm Burner was withdrawn on Monday after suffering an injury while trialing Sunday night. Bewildering will now face first reserve Princess Pout.

“He looks well placed as he likes being on the outside. You still have to do everything right even with only two dogs in the race. If you make a mistake, with the caliber of these dogs you’ll be up against it.”

The Buccillis bred Bewildering. His sire Black Magic Opal won the 2013 TAB Melbourne Cup for the pair, while the mother Outlandish is a sister to the freakishly fast Phenomenal who they also owned.

“Having bred him makes it extra special for sure.”

Riveting the second of the Buccillis runners has drawn inside of Nature’s Gent in the first match of the night.

“He definitely needs to be on the inside. If you watch his races he often wants to get the fence. He’s drawn nicely – he’s going to have to do everything right.”

Renowned for owning exceptionally fast greyhounds, the Buccills are fans of the Speed Star concept.

“It’s very exciting. When we had Phenomenal a series like this would’ve been great. Having a race where it relies on the clock is exciting.”

The Bill Collins Speed Star is open to the fastest eight nominations based on times recorded between February 2nd and May 7th. Times are recorded both in races on Thursdays and Sundays, and in a series of qualification trials. This will be the fourth time the club has conducted a series in the Speed Star format.

The winner of each match will win $10,000 while the greyhound that records the fastest overall time will pick up a $15,000 bonus. The Bill Collins Speed Star is one of three group 3 events to be run on Thursday night along with the Racecallers (595m) and Lizrene (715m).
