Next stop Maidment, Amigo!

The ultra consistent Amigo improved on his already stellar record Thursday night at Sandown Park.

Sent to the boxes as the $2 favourite, Amigo began well before taking full advantage of his draw to lead clearly first time past the post. He got tired in the closing stages but had a break big enough to secure victory. The final margin two lengths in a slick 34.21.

The win was Amigo’s fifth from eight attempts over the middle distance at both Victorian metropolitan tracks.

“It was nice to have box 1 for him, he’s a good railing dog. You can’t have too much confidence as they’re all hard to beat – there’s seven other dogs with the same idea,” said trainer James Arthur post-race.

Amigo’s success over the distance came during the later half of last year before he dropped back to the sprint journey with an aim for Group 1 glory.

“I dropped him back in distance for the Silver Chief series. This distance suits him much better, over the sprint he’s just not quick enough to match it with them early.”

Amigo now heads to the Group Listed Maidment Memorial this Wednesday night at Sandown Park. It is without doubt his toughest test yet, he comes up against proven stars in Buck Forty, Lithgow Panther and Polijuice Potion.

The Maidment Memorial is the first of two Group Listed events on the card with Australian Sprint set to round out the quaddie. They are just part of what will be a big night of entertainment at Sandown Park on the eve of Australia Day. Angry Anderson will be trackside performing (after races 8 and 9) along with many more activities for people of all ages. Click here for more information.
