It’s A Bird flies high in Bold Trease

It’s A Bird secured her first group race triumph when she took out last night’s group 1 Bold Trease.

It’s A Bird began well from box 1 and settled as the leader first time past the post. Jaimandy Hatty and Ramifications challenged late but they were no match for It’s A Bird as she went on to win by 3½ lengths in a slick 41.89.

The win was her 17th from 46 career starts and the $100,000 first prize skyrocketed her prize money tally to $158,864.

It was Devon Meadows trainer Wayne Vassallo’s second Bold Trease success after he won the feature back in 2003 with Proven Adonis. Wayne’s partner Karen Pitt was delighted following Sunday’s box draw after It’s A Bird drew the inside alley which proved a significant advantage in the final.

“I was very happy when she drew the red – she was definitely going to be suited by the draw. I knew there was a bit of speed in the race so I thought if she could lead she’d be a good chance to win. During the race I was worried she was going to be run down but luckily she kicked and held on,”said Pitt.

“We knew she would have to improve on her time in the heat and that’s exactly what she did – we couldn’t be happier, it’s still sinking in!”

The win added to It’s A Bird’s impressive record at Sandown Park having now won seven of her 13 starts at the View Road circuit.

During the post-race presentation Pitt was joined by her 10-month-old son, Toby.

“With Toby by our side it does make it much more special.”

This isn’t the only success the kennel has had with owners Tyrone Whittington and Greg Prod after taking out last year’s Shepparton Cup with Azza Azza Azza.

It’s A Bird will head to the breeding barn following her racing career though the move was nearly put forward due to a setback.

“She had an injury and we were wary of her coming on season, so we got permission to breed just incase. Last night’s win certainly does favors in terms of her offspring.”

The Bold Trease was one of four features on the night – Shima Song took out the Cup Night Sprint, Dundee Osprey claimed the Cup Night Middle Distance and Ando’s Mac became the first New South Wales trained greyhound since the year 2000 to win the TAB Melbourne Cup. Click here for full story.
