Dual feature attracts best in the land

Australia’s fastest greyhounds will head to Sandown Park this Thursday night for the heats of the Macro Meats Sapphire Crown and Berwick Mazda Harrison-Dawson.

The Berwick Mazda Harrison-Dawson, restricted to male greyhounds only, features 13 individual Group race winners, seven of which having saluted at Group 1 level. The 32 competitors have combined for an incredible $4,134,146 in prize money.

Headlining the series is TAB Melbourne Cup winner Black Magic Opal (pictured right). The highest prize money earning greyhound currently racing with $586,865 in stakes, Black Magic Opal is chasing a six Group race win that will see him catapult to second on the all time list behind Miata.

Joining the defending Melbourne Cup champion are Group 1 winners Tonk, Kiss Me Ketut, Hawk Alone, Buckle Up Wes, Ollie Bale and Peter Rocket, as well as one of Australia’s most exciting chasers, Hooksy which is chasing a seventh straight victory.

The Macro Meats Sapphire Crown, restricted to female greyhounds, also promises to be an exciting series with WA raider Zelemar Fever attempting to claim a second Victoria Group 1 after earlier winning the Temlee at The Meadows.

The first two greyhounds in each heat will progress to their respective finals the following Thursday (15 May) with each final carrying a $100,000 winner’s cheque. The heats of Australia’s richest greyhound race – the RSN Sandown Cup – will also be run on that night, with the $250,000 final to be run on Thursday 22 May.
