May carnival kicks off


 

Sandown’s May carnival kicks off this Thursday night with black type racing over all three distances.

 

Lizrene

An All Star field has assembled for the $36,000 Group 3 Lizrene with runners collectively earning over $1.5 million in prize money.

Darren McDonald’s Sweet It Is comes off her Group 1 Association Cup win at Wentworth Park, while Rocky Bale and Xylia Allen will be seeking to turn the tables after finishing second and third. Five time Group 1 winner Destini Fireball continues to close the gap to Miata’s prize money record with $84,313 separating the two champions. Alpe D’Huez, Paris Sparks, Sisco Rage and Hala Belle round out the outstanding field.

 

Bill Collins

Up and coming speedster Hooksy headlines the Listed Bill Collins Memorial, returning to Sandown Park fresh from his Group 3 New Sensation victory. The Tanya Auld trained star will be aiming to maintain his unbeaten record at Sandown Park. Buckle Up Mason has drawn box five and will be looking to repeat his last start effort in which in he won by six lengths in 29.26.  Group 1 winner Iona Seven makes her second start after an injury enforced layoff.

 

Bert Bryant

Campaspe Will headlines the $36,000 Group 3 event and will be looking to build on his recent Listed Easter Gift win. Group race finalists Shadow Lane, Hailstorm Billy, Musquin Bale and Hawk Alone will also line up for the $25,000 first prize.

Thursday night is the first of four big weeks of racing at Sandown Park, featuring eight black type races and over $800,000 in prize money.

 

The carnival will culminate with the world’s richest staying race the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup to be run on Thursday 22 May.
