Full Flight flying

Full Flight flew around Sandown Park yesterday, recording the third fastest win for maiden ever at the circuit.

A beautifully bred son of TAB Melbourne Cup winner Black Magic Opal and Laurels winner Fantastic Skye, Full Flight began fairly from box 8 but mustered quickly to cross the field entering the first turn. In clear air, he extended the margin throughout to win by more than 10 lengths in 29.294.

“It was a good run, really happy with him,” said trainer Justin Nolan.

“He’s always been a fast dog. He had a spell after his first run and has grown up a bit, I think he’s just matured a little bit now.”

Full Flight has drawn box 4 in Thursday night’s final which Nolan believes shouldn’t be a major concern.

“He wants to be a bit closer to the fence. He’s just got to step with them and be left alone as they come out of the boxes and hopefully he can do the same thing.”

Nolan, a butcher by trade, trains a team of just four greyhounds from his Devon Meadows property alongside wife Michelle (pictured above with Full Flight) and their sons. It will be a busy couple of days for the family, with another of their greyhounds, Zero Cool, set to jump from box 1 in Friday night’s $10,000 to the winner Bendigo Gold Rush maiden.

“That’s where she wants to be.

“There’s a bit of pace in the race so hopefully she steps with them. It was her first start and she’s a bit inexperienced, but she’ll come to hand now and we’ll try and get her up over 500m.”

Win lose or draw, the Nolan greyhounds will be spoilt after their runs with a burger and a soft serve cone the preferred treat.

“(Michelle) babies them a little but they respond to it. It’s good having a small team, you can spend a bit more time with them individually, they are all different and need different things.”

“I wouldn’t be able to do it without her. I’ve got a butcher shop in Boronia, she takes them trialling and does them each morning and the boys get in and give us a hand. It makes it easier with good people around you – I can’t take all of the glory!”
