Racing’s most exciting format is back!

Greyhound racing’s most exciting format will take over Sandown Park again this May with Australia’s fastest chasers converging for another entire program of match racing.

The Bill Collins Speed Star will be run on Thursday 10 May and will see 40 greyhounds contest 20 match races with just under $200,000 in prize money up for grabs. Matches will be run over all three racing distances. There will be five events of four match races as opposed to last September’s six events.

“Speed Star is one of the most popular and most eagerly anticipated events we run each year – it captures the imagination of the younger generation,” said Sandown Park CEO Greg Miller.

“The response from greyhound racing participants, punters and fans for previous series has been extremely positive. Wagering on sport is becoming more and more popular, we think the head-to-head aspect of Speed Star fits in to a sport style of betting.”

Like in previous series’ TAB will be offering a wide range of markets on the Bill Collins Speed Star.

“This is our sixth edition of Speed Star and it continues to be a popular betting option for punters, especially the younger generation with all-ups. We’ll continue to work with TAB to ensure betting on the event is easy.”

Feature events over all three distances will be equal in prize money with $50,000 up for grabs in each, the two secondary sprint events that will carry $20,000 each in prize money.

Greyhound qualify for each event based on times recorded at Sandown Park from 1 January 2018 until Sunday 6 May. Additional qualifying trials will be run on Sunday April 22, 29 and Sunday May 6.

Aston Dee Bee, Dyna Dean and Rippin’ Sam head the current standings for each distance.
