Sandown Cup

The RSN Sandown Cup is Australia’s most sought after race for staying greyhounds.

First run in 1963 as the Woolamai Cup, the RSN Sandown Cup has been won by some of the greatest stayers to grace the track, including dual RSN Sandown Cup winners Lizrene and Paul’s Thunder, Boronia Blossom, Arvo’s Junior, Osti’s Joker and Mantra Lad.boldtrease

However, the RSN Sandown Cup will forever be synonymous with one greyhound – Bold Trease.

Norm McCullagh’s fawn superstar won an amazing four consecutive RSN Sandown Cups, a feat that was not only unprecedented, but never likely to be repeated again – in any race.

The ‘Warrnambool Warrior’ was a crowd favourite due to his spectacular drop-out-and-run-on style of racing, and was named the 1987 Victorian Greyhound of the Year and Greyhound of the Decade (1980-1990), and sits in both Greyhound Racing Victoria and Australian Greyhound Racing Association Hall of Fame.

So highly is Bold Trease regarded by the club that it named the Group 1 staying race on Melbourne Cup night in his honour.

Prize money for this famous race grew to $250,000 in 2014, firmly entrenching its status as the world’s richest greyhound staying race.

In 2015 Sweet It Is claimed her second successive RSN Sandown Cup, defeating Lady Toy by 5 3/4 lengths in 41.48. You can watch a replay of the 2015 RSN Sandown Cup below.
