In a remarkable turn of events, stewards declared the
2007 Group 1 Radio Sport
927 Sandown Cup a ‘no race’ after the starting boxes opened
prematurely causing the field to gallop from the 715 metre start to the catching
pen area.
Acting on their own observations and viewing the
relevant video footage, stewards established that the boxes had opened
prematurely due to the inadvertent activation of the trip manual starting lever
by the trainer of one of the Cup finalists. Stewards determined that the
incident was purely accidental, with no intent involved.
Based on the Greyhound Rules of Racing, stewards
confirmed the race will not be re-run, and that the $86,000 prizemoney would be
distributed evenly among the eight finalists.
