Sandown Park to celebrate Women In Racing

By George Farrugia

Greyhound racing is currently enjoying the incredible reign of two queens from different regions, and their hopeful meeting later this year is one of the most anticipated events within the sport.
Both Victoria’s Wow She’s Fast and New South Wales’ She’s A Pearl have won over a million dollars in prizemoney, both have starred in Group 1 victories and both have captivated fans since debuting in 2021.

Girl power was most recently on show when Wow’s She Fast obliterated a quality field to claim the Group 1 Sapphire Crown at Sandown in an incredible 28.81 – just .02 outside Aston Rupee’s 515-metre track record. She’s A Pearl’s winning steak at Wentworth Park – which includes victories in the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg and Million Dollar Chase – was one of the most dominant stretches the sport has seen.

The fairer sex will again be up in lights when we celebrate Women In Racing night at Sandown Park on June 9. The evening will feature the running of the GOTBA Karen Leek and Judy Hayley memorial. The Judy Hayley Memorial (for Lady Trainers only), is named in honour of the 2001 Melbourne Cup winning trainer who lost her brave battle with cancer in 2012. The GOTBA Karen Leek final celebrates the life of one of the most respected people in the sport, who tragically lost her life in 2020. Leek enjoyed fantastic success as a breeder and trainer during her career, and was also responsible for rearing some of the stars of our sport.

Those present will also hear from guest speaker Christine Nixon, the first ever female Australian police commissioner, who understands the challenges involved when working in a male-dominated arena.
