Tommy Shelby is Melbourne Cup bound

Icon of the sport Tommy Shelby will be nominated for this Friday’s TAB Melbourne Cup heats.

He’s been on the sidelines since August due to injury however has set a career best trial time at Cannington in preparation for his comeback.

“His trial last Thursday was fantastic, I feel he’s still a couple of runs from his peak but we had to make a decision,” his trainer Steve Withers told TABradio’s Greyhound Gossip.

Tommy Shelby is in transit to Melbourne and will return to the property of Kel Greenough which he has called home for his past Victorian campaigns.

“It was a very tough decision and we weighed everything up. From our point of view there’s no perfect answer, but we’ve pulled the trigger and will take our chances.”

Tommy Shelby is exempt into Cup heats with wins in the Australian Cup and Golden Easter Egg earlier this year. He was a finalist of last year’s edition of the world’s greatest greyhound race and finished 3rd behind Hard Style Rico and Simon Told Helen.

“The Melbourne Cup is the Melbourne Cup, it’s steeped in history. He’s aiming to do what no greyhound has done before by winning the Australian Cup, Golden Easter Egg and Melbourne Cup.”

Nominations for TAB Melbourne Cup heats and Bold Trease heats close at 10am on Tuesday. Fields are expected to be out early afternoon.
