TAB Melbourne Cup prize reaches record level

The winner of the TAB Melbourne Cup will take home a record $500,000 for the first time in 2021 after the club announced a significant boost in prize money for the world’s greatest greyhound race.

The race will carry a total of $762,500 – an increase of over 21% – and for the first time will include money for fourth place as part of GRV’s recent prize money package.

Neil Brown, Chairman of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, said it’s important that the Cup remains on an upwards trajectory to reflect its status as the world’s most prestigious event.

“The Melbourne Cup is a race that trainers across the country aspire to win, it’s a career defining achievement. The prize money is a life changing sum, but it’s the prestige and history behind the Cup that defines its status as the world’s greatest greyhound race,” said Brown.

“The Cup has an honour roll that sparkles like no other feature event across the country. It’s filled with Hall of Famers, both greyhounds and participants that have had a huge impact on the sport.”

TAB Melbourne Cup qualifiers kick off on Thursday October 7 with the ‘50 Day Countdown’ special event in which the winner will be exempt into Cup heats on Friday November 19.

The Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup final will be run on Friday November 26.
