Geall keen on Fernando Mick

TAB Melbourne Cup winning trainer David Geall says the promising Fernando Mick is the best of his three runners at Sandown Park tonight.

Geall, who won the world’s greatest greyhound race with My Redeemer in 2018 (pictured above), told the RSN Breakfast Club that he believes Fernando Mick is starting to deliver on his potential.

“He’s been a nice young dog for us,” he said.

“He’s been thereabouts for his last 6-8 starts but last Saturday night at the Meadows he really did step up a notch running 29.83 with a nice solid run home time. It seems, or we’re hoping, that he’s stepping up a notch because 29.83 was around four lengths quicker than he had ever run.”

Fernando Mick turned two the day prior to his Meadows triumph, his third victory from 12 starts. Tonight’s assignment will be his first start at Sandown Park and will also be the first time he’s jumped from box 1, a factor which Geall believes is in his favour.

“He’s got tremendous pace once he hits the ground. We’ve got to bear in mind that he’s not the best of beginners but he’s a hard little chaser and when he hits the ground he’s got a real nice turn of foot.

“We expect him to really accelerate when he hits the ground and from box 1 we’re hoping he’ll get a nice clean run to the first turn which will enable him to go.”

Fernando Mick has firmed from $2.10 to $1.90 with TAB.

Geall also has Bounce Back (race 4 number 3) and Strada (race 11 number 8) engaged on tonight’s card.

The first of 12 races will jump at 6.47pm. Click here for your free Watchdog form guide.
