McCooly’s Lad set sights on Sandown Park

Highly promising sprinter McCooly’s Lad will venture to Sandown Park this afternoon.

He completed preparations on Wednesday with a fast handslip trial of 23.12 (12.76, 10.36).

“I didn’t think he’d go as well as he did as it was his first look,” said part-owner/breeder Darren Puleio.

He’ll take part in heats of the GRV Vic Bred 1-4 wins series, which sees a $10,000 to-the-winner final this Thursday.

‘Ralph’, as he’s known, has created waves in his past two starts with blinding wins at Bendigo. The first of them in a time of 27.73 which was the fastest ever by a Maiden and 9th fastest ever over 500m.

The Vic Bred Maiden series at Bendigo was the same one Black Opium progressed through in 2018 before she went on to be runner-up in the Cup final behind My Redeemer.

“A month ago we were just hoping he’d win a race, but after his first two runs at Warrnambool the penny seems to have dropped and he’s going really well.”

A lot of water is yet to go under the bridge but the Anthony Azzopardi trained sprinter is $71 in TAB’s pre-nominations Melbourne Cup market.
