‘Red’ ready to riot on Sandown Park return

TAB Melbourne Cup hero Whiskey Riot returns to Sandown Park on Thursday night for the first time since his memorable victory in the world’s greatest greyhound race in November.

Known simply as ‘Red’ at Azzopardi’s Rowsley kennel, the dual group 1 winner – he also won the Temlee at the Meadows in February – is quoted a $1.28 favourite to the race with tab.com.au and trainer Anthony Azzopardi couldn’t be happier with his kennel star.

“He’s feeling good, he’s trialling as well as he ever has and as long as he steps I expect him to go real quick,” he said.

“He loves to go to the races and gets the job done every time. He’s a full on professional – a lot of good dogs have little quirks, but he does nothing wrong. He doesn’t waste any energy, but when he gets to the boxes he just wants to go. He’s a beautiful dog.”

A win in tonight’s race would take Whiskey Riot’s career prize money to $812,295, past 2017 TAB Melbourne Cup winner Aston Dee Bee and into 9th place all time.

Surprisingly, TAB Melbourne Cup winners don’t have a great record when returning to the track. Since 2010 Aston Dee Bee is the only Cup winner to win over 515m at his next start at the venue, taking out the Shootout on New Years Day in 2018.

Azzopardi has a strong hand in tonight’s card with all six of his runners rated winning chances with tab.com.au.

TAB is running a special ‘Azzopardi Trained Winners’ market on tonight’s meeting, with $1.55 on offer for 2+ winners.
