Nye’s memorable weekend begins tonight

It’s a huge weekend ahead for young trainer Brett Nye and it kicks off tonight with hot pup Barooga Smoke in the Moreira @ Stud Maiden final at Sandown Park.

Less than 24 hours after qualifying Last Hurrah for the Australian Cup on Saturday night, he took the covers off Barooga Smoke who was seriously impressive on his racing debut.

“I’ve known for a while that he had ability. Since I’m only new to training I’ve had to learn where to place him and do the right thing so early on in his career,” explained Nye.

Nye bought ‘Smokey’ as a young pup and now looks set for an exciting career.

“I bought him as a pup when he was three months old. He went to a few different places to be reared, but he came back when I moved to where I am now.

“I was lucky enough to meet Nashy (Matt Nash) and I was able to get my license training from his property.

“Once I got my trainers license I had greyhounds of just fair ability. Nashy has taken a step away from it all so I’ve landed some handy dogs that he had.”

Not long after Barooga Smoke won on Sunday, Nye was quick into action buying a Launching Pad ticket – which are now sold out. Heats of the $420,000 series will be run on Thursday March 26.

Following tonight Nye will get set for the biggest moment of his short training career when Last Hurrah lines up in the Australian Cup at The Meadows on Saturday night. Click here for more on his story and history in the sport by The Greyhound Recorder.
