As the sun sets on another memorable TAB Melbourne Cup carnival, the group race circus rolls on.
With feature races across the country over the coming weeks, here’s where each of the TAB Melbourne Cup finalists will be heading next.
1. Whiskey Riot
Anthony Azzopardi
Ballarat Cup heat, Saturday. Race 6 number 4
The TAB Melbourne Cup winner returns to his home track for a tilt at the Ballarat Cup. Aston Dee Bee completed the double in 2017, and three of the last five Ballarat Cup winners contested the Melbourne Cup.
2. Western Envoy
Angela Langton
Ballarat Cup heat, Saturday. Race 5 number 1
After going so close to claiming the world’s greatest greyhound race, Western Envoy is also heading to Ballarat.
3. Hooked On Scotch
Jason Thompson
Hobart Thousand heats, Thursday 12 December
The newly minted Sandown track record holder is heading to the Apple Isle for the country’s longest running group 1 race. He will undoubtedly start the pre-post favourite, and given a clear run, give the track record a shake.
4. Oakvale Beauty
Jeff Britton
The Laurels at Sandown Park, Sunday 15 December
The unlucky runner of the TAB Melbourne Cup. Oakvale Beauty was winding up as they turned for home but had no where to go before being nudged out of the placings by the fast finishing Hooked On Scotch. Will now be set for the time honoured group 2 Laurels at Sandown Park.
5. Flynn
Jason Thompson
Hobart Thousand heats, Thursday 12 December
The Speed Star winner was beaten for speed in the early stages of the TAB Melbourne Cup and when he found trouble at the first turn his race was run. He’ll join kennelmate Hooked On Scotch for a campaign across Bass Straight.
6. Jaro Bale
Andrea Dailly
Sandown Park, Thursday 5 December
Gives every impression he’ll make a fine middle distance dog and will make his 595m debut at Sandown Park tonight. Has drawn box 1 and with only four rivals after scratchings looks very hard to beat.
7. Get It Gizmo
Harry Manolitsis
Ballarat Cup heat, Saturday. Race 8 number 5
The Topgun winner will also head up the Western Highway to Ballarat.
8. Campini
Glenn Rounds
Perth Cup
Campini will head home to Paul Stuart to prepare for WA’s biggest race, the Perth Cup in March. Before then, the group 3 Birthday Cup at Mandurah (3 and 10 January) and the Paws Of Thunder (Wentworth Park 18 and 24 January) are possibilities
