Barooga Brett the one to beat

Brooke Ennis believes Barooga Brett is the best winning chance of her three runners at Sandown Park tonight.

A two-time group 1 winner, Barooga Brett is the $2 favourite ahead of kennelmate Charging Yaala ($3.10 from box 1) in race 7. Form expert Jason Adams believed Barooga Brett would get a clear run especially with box 5 vacant following the scratching of Get It Gizmo and took it one out in his quadrella selections. Ennis echoed Adams’ confidence.

“I’d have to go with Jason Adams, I think Barooga Brett is the one to beat out of those guys.”

Barooga Brett boasts a best time of 29.08 at the track, and similar time tonight will catapult him into Speed Star contention. Jason Thompsons’ Hooked On Scotch is the current leader in the Speed Star standings following his recent dazzling 29.087 gallop.

Ennis also trains Nordegren, the $4.20 second favourite for the night’s opening event, however Ennis was not as confident about her chances.

“I think today is probably a little bit hard for her,” she said.

“She hasn’t drawn ideally and from what we’ve seen so far I don’t think it’s her ideal distance. I think she’ll be much better when she steps up in ground,” she said.

Ennis boasts one of the best strike rates of any trainer in Victoria with a 33% wining strike rate across all Victorian tracks in 2019.
