Stayers and sprinters to clash in McKenna heats

A host of stars are set and ready for heats of the McKenna Memorial tomorrow night.

Year after year this series produces strong heats and an even better final. The mid-distance (595m) brings together stayers dropping back and more powerful sprinters stepping up.

Few greyhounds carry the hype that surrounds the freakish Midnight Dare (pictured) who’s engaged in the opening heat. She returned to racing on Saturday night at The Meadows and won in devastating fashion.

She rises in distance for the first time with just eight career starts under her belt – it does feel like she’s been around much longer than that with the impact she has had on followers. She meets arguably Australia’s most versatile and consistent greyhound in Neo Cleo.

Wind back the clock to January and Deliver was a dominant in the Maidment at Sandown Park, you can’t help but feel déjà vu with him set to jump favourite from box 1 in heat 2.

In the penultimate heat we see another stayer on the up in Often Imitated. It’s not surprising that she is blessed with strength being a daughter of one of the greatest stayers of all time, Sweet It Is.

In the final heat Sweet As Emm will start a fancy after her brutal bounce back to form on Saturday night at The Meadows. Already a winner over Sandown’s 595m in fast time, she looks set to produce a similar performance.

Heat 1 of the McKenna Memorial will jump shortly after 7pm.
