Dewan team snare first city win of the year

Dewana Express claimed his and trainer Brendan Dewan’s first city win of the year last night at Sandown Park.

Leading into the race Dewan wasn’t fond of box 7 but his attitude quickly changed when Dewana Express got to 2nd on the home turn looking ominous. He went on to win narrowly defeating South Of Eden and Rumble Drive, with just a ¼ of a length covering the trio.

“When he pushed through down the back I thought he’s got a real chance now, I knew he was going to rail underneath them,” explained Dewan.

The Dewan family’s post-race ritual is to give their greyhounds dim sims, which Dewana Express was treated to last night.

“They’ve always loved them. When I take them out to the car, the first thing they look for is Lynn (wife) with the dim sims. It doesn’t matter where they finish, first or last they get them.”

The Dewans are regulars at Sandown Park with their greyhounds strongly renowned for their effort and consistency.

Dewana Express and litter brother Dewana Special boast tremendous strike rates. Together they’ve had 174 starts for 22 wins and 77 placings.

“They’ve both been really consistent, good bread and butter dogs. I prefer ones like them that aren’t stars but come out and try 100% every week, rather than have those that can trial fast but not produce it in their races.”

Dewan’s involvement in greyhounds spans over 30 years which started by receiving one as a pet, he then “caught the bug” and has been around them ever since. He breeds, owns and trains all of greyhounds in partnership with son Matthew.

One of the fastest sprinters their line has produced is Dewana Result. He turns 6-years-old in July, an age where most greyhounds are lapping up retirement but for him, he is getting set for his 81st career start and first since August last year.

“For the last few months I’ve put him in the runs at home once the others are finished. He goes in there with some of our retirees and they work hard. We went to trial a few pups at Lang Lang and we decided to bring him for a run, and he went the fastest of the lot.

“I put him in a satisfactory trial at Cranbourne and he won that, then I trialed him at Sandown and he went really well.”
