RSN Sandown Cup Night


It’s one of the biggest nights of greyhound racing of the year!

RSN Sandown Cup night, featuring THREE group 1 features highlighted by the world’s richest race for stayers, the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup. Whether you’re heading to the track to catch the action up close or settling in at home or at your local, here’s all the information you need to help find a winner or two.

Driving: View Road Springvale
Train: Dandenong, Cranbourne or Pakenham line trains. Track is a short walk from Sandown Park station

RSN Sandown Cup
– The RSN Sandown Cup was first run in 1957
– Sweet It Is holds the race record of 41.49 (2015)
– Bold Trease made the race his own, winning the Cup on four occasions (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989)
– As well as Bold Trease, Paul’s Thunder (1970, 1971), Lizrene (1972, 1973), Irma Bale (2012, 2013) and Sweet It Is (2014, 2015) have defended their Sandown Cup titles
– Female chasers have won the last six RSN Sandown Cups, while male grounds won the 15 prior. Moment To Jive (6) is the only female in this year’s final
– No greyhound has won the red rug to victory since Osti’s Joker in 2000
– There was no RSN Sandown Cup in 2007 – the famous ‘no race’
– Robert Britton is the only trainer in the final that has previously won the RSN Sandown Cup (Fanta Bale, 2017). His sister Linda has also won it (Jennev, 2002), as has his Hall Of Fame father Alan (Tonight’s Wish, 1997). Robert has four finalists in 2018 – Barcali (box 1), Quick Jagger (box 3), Tornado Tears (box 8) and Rippin’ Sam (box 8)

Sapphire Crown
– Was first run in 1974 as the Sir Rylah Classic
– Became a female only race in 2002, and best 32 since 2012
– Lamia Bale holds the race record of 29.23 (2015)
– Since becoming a female only race the Sapphire Crown has been won by some of the greatest sprinters of modern times, including Hall of Fame greyhounds Bogie Leigh and Paua To Burn, Melbourne Cup winner Betty’s Angel, Topgun winner Cindeen Shelby, and multiple group race winner Xylia Allen
– Kel Greenough and Angela Langton have runners in the final and have won the race previously with Cindeen Shelby (2009) and Que Sera Sera (2007) respectively. Tom Dailly, husband of Andrea Dailly, has also won the race with Dutchy’s Angel (2000), as has Angela Langton’s partner Jeff Britton with Oakvale Destiny (2014)

Harrison-Dawson
– First run in 2012 as an amalgam of the Dawson and the Henry Harrison Memorial. It honours the contribution of the late Henry Harrison his daughter Loretta, and Loretta’s husband the club’s patron Geoff Dawson
– Race record is held by Fernando Bale 29.13 (2015)
– Robert Britton is the only trainer in the final that has won the race previously (Clone Your Own, 2013)
