Bonnie Beauty set to step up in trip

A rise in distance looks imminent for Bonnie Beauty after her dominant win over 595m on Thursday night.

She drew well in box 1 and sprung out to lead clearly first time past the post. By that stage the race was over, she went on to win by 6½ lengths in a fast 34.17.

The win added to her unique record of 12 wins from 23 starts with no minor placings. Her trainer Joe Borg was happy with the win post-race and revealed his plans to soon step ‘Daisy’ up to the 700m.

“Her form has been off lately – I wasn’t totally happy with her run in her Australian Cup heat. She’s bounced back well, she’s a front runner and that’s what we saw tonight,” said Borg.

“I’ll give her one more 600 at The Meadows then I’ll step her up to 700.”

Borg also had Myrniong Corner engaged earlier in the night. He began awkwardly but wound up late to finish a close 3rd behind Ian Garland’s Zipping Nitro.

“It was a big run. He missed the kick and probably lost the race then. He bumped with Zipping Nitro early, if the boxes were swapped I think it may have been a different result.”

Although performing well over 595m, Borg is hesitant to step up Myrniong Corner to 700m.

“He doesn’t look to be a staying type, He’s a bit over the top, unlike Bonnie Beauty she’s very relaxed. You need a relaxed type for a stayer.

“But, he’s got such a big heart and big motor so we may give it a go in the future. We would try him over some 650m races first.”

Myrniong Corner returns to Sandown Park on Sunday in race 6.
