Feltham and ‘Giz’ claim first city win

Carly Feltham claimed her first ever city win last night at Sandown Park.

The consistent Cosmic Tilly won in her 11th attempt at metropolitan level for the Devon Meadows trainer. Cosmic Tilly sprung out of box 7 and set up a five length break mid-race. The challengers came late but were no match as she held on by 2½ lengths, her first win from 13 tries over 595m.

Feltham’s excitement was not hidden post-race as well as a sense of relief.

“I was putting my hands up behind the boxes saying ‘yes, I’ve finally won one’,” said Feltham.

“I wasn’t totally convinced she was going to hold on, but fortunately she did. At one stage she was running consistent placings almost every second week for two months – I just knew she had to be lucky when jumping and she got out really well.”

Cosmic Tilly, or Giz as she’s known at home, had a break between October and January and has returned to racing in good form. Her win last night was her second on-the-trot after she won impressively at Cranbourne last Saturday night.

“She’s not long back from having a three month seasonal spell. She ran a super time at Cranbourne on Saturday night just one length off the Cranbourne Cup winning time.”

Feltham has only been training greyhounds for 3 years and is supported by her husband Kane who has had previous involvement in the sport. The pair race a small team with just four racing greyhounds in their kennel.

“It’s encouraging to know that we’re racing alongside the professional trainers and able to snatch a few wins, so it means we must be doing something right.”

Feltham achieved a rare feat by having a group race finalist before claiming a city win. She had Wharfies Girl in the Laurels final late late year – click here for full story.

Later in the night star sprinter Blue Sky Riot celebrated her birthday in style. Mick Floyd spoke with Anthony Azzopardi about the win – click here for full story.
