Georgiou highlights Jeff Britton treble

Trainer Jeff Britton has hit a rich vein of form with a treble of winners last night at Sandown Park.

Wise Piquet and Lockrod racked up the first two wins for the Anakie based trainer at prices of $14 and $12 respectively. Alpha Georgiou was the third and by far the most impressive of the trio, he upstaged race favourite and proven star Jimmy Newob by 2¼ lengths in 29.38.

“Up against Jimmy Newob and Extreme Magic I didn’t expect him to win that race,” said Britton.

Alpha Georgiou has spent just three months at the kennel after starting his racing career in his home state of Queensland.

“He’s been a nice surprise. He hasn’t been beginning that well since he’s been down here, last night was probably the first time he’s come out well.”

When asked if Alpha Georgiou can improve further and compete at the highest level, Britton was bullish in his response.

“If he continues to do what he’s doing he will. When I first got him I took him to The Meadows and he went 30.06, I thought that was really good at the time. He dropped off a little bit after that, but now seems to be really settling in well at our kennel.”

After last night’s treble Britton ended the week with five winners at Sandown Park, from 9 runners engaged in eight races. The standout of Monday night’s success was the long awaited return of kennel star Mepunga Blazer.

He raced for the first time since September after a battle with injury. It was the return Britton had hoped for with Mepunga Blazer an all the way winner in 29.40.

“It was nice to see him get around safely. He was a little bit stressed but he pulled up really well. When they come back to racing after having such a long time away from it they can get a bit over-excited.

“I’ll get a few runs under his belt before the Australian Cup comes around. It’s race fitness he needs now. It’s like playing football and having practice matches, you need a few under your belt before you’re fit for round 1.”
