Black Impala commanding in middle distance debut

Black Impala continued the impressive start to his racing career with a three length win on Thursday night at Sandown Park.

He began well and accelerated quickly to lead by four lengths first time past the post. Tobacco Leaf challenged throughout the but the early margin went unchanged. Black Impala went on to win comfortably in 34.31.

The win was his fifth from 16 career starts and first over 595m. According to trainer Glenn Dainton the step up in distance was required after hitting the line well in recent attempts over 515m.

“The step up was definitely needed. He was fairly away last week, finished strong and was only beaten by a head,” said Dainton.

“It looks like he runs out the middle distance well, hopefully later down the track he’ll go even further. We’ll see how he goes, he’s still very young.”

Dainton was handed training duties of Black Impala by owner and good friend Joe Borg. Borg trained the mother of Black Impala, Proven Impala, who was a dual Group race winner and earned $362,895 in prize money.

“Joe and I are pretty good friends. When he was handed to me I didn’t have any racing greyhounds at home, so he was a good addition.”

Dainton is confident we’ll see improvement from Black Impala.

“His first go tonight over 595m and he’s run 34.30, I’d say he’ll improve on that. Hopefully over time he steps up and mixes it with those in higher grade. He’ll have one more run here (at Sandown) than we’ll take him to The Meadows, probably for a grade 5 heat and final series.”
