Reigning champ Worm Burner heads National Sprint nominations


Worm Burner will aim to become the first ever greyhound to win dual National Sprint titles representing two different states.

He won last year’s Sprint Championship in emphatic style flying the flag for South Australia, this time around he enters the series as a Victorian.

A total of 28 greyhounds have been nominated to compete in the Victorian series of the National Sprint Championship. Worm Burner heads a team of six nominated from the Thompson kennel with Bill Collins Speed Star winner Bewildering, Aston Bolero, Aston Dee Bee, Aqua Cheetah and Extreme Magic joining him.

The Jeff Britton and Angela Langton team also have six nominated highlighted by youngster Mepunga Blazer. Interestingly, Dundee Osprey has been nominated for the sprint series just months after running 2nd in the RSN Sandown Cup.

Blazin’ Bomber is set to make his long awaited return to metropolitan racing as well as Raw Ability.

Ando’s Mac and Nangar Rock are nominated however will have to compete in the New South Wales series at Wentworth Park due to not residing in a Victorian kennel for more than the required 76 days of the 150 prior to close of nominations.

Heats of the Victorian sprint series will be held at Sandown Park on Thursday August 3 with the state final to be held the following week. The winner will represent Victoria in the National Sprint Final at Albion Park on Friday August 25.

Heats of the Victorian distance series will be held at The Meadows on Saturday August 5. Fanta Bale and Burn One Down head a list of 14 nominated.
