Preludes kick off in Slick style

Slick Ice captured this year’s first TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude last night with a grinding win.

Slick Ice led the field first time past the post and maintained his break down the back straight. Slick Ice fought gallantly and staved off the fast finishing One For Me and Allen Terminator to win by ½ a length in 29.62.

Melton trainer Andy Stewart remained modest yet proud of his charge post-race.

“That’s his box, he loves it out wide. It was a strong field and his early pace separated him from the rest. His first and second splits are reasonably good so if he’s out in front they’ve always got to get past him,” said Stewart.

Slick Ice’s win followed up his solid effort last start and since then it was some tender loving care that had him in good stead for his next assignment.

“Since his run at The Meadows last Saturday night all I’ve done is walk and massage him – that’s all he needs.

“He’s sound as anything and gets thoroughly checked over every week. We’re very pleased with all of our team – we couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Later in the night Bruce Tycoon produced a strong win to take out the second TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude in 29.60. Igor Karkaroff took advantage of a rails run to take out Prelude 3 for the Cockerell team and Ultimate Magic led all the way in Prelude 4 for trainer Anthony Azzopardi.

Preludes ran on the night were the first of a series of four, to be run every second week leading up to the TAB Melbourne Cup heats on Friday 11 November. Each Prelude winner gains exemption into the heats of the world’s richest greyhound race.

Sandown Park will be celebrating all things manly next Thursday night with the Club’s annual Mans Night, encouraging prostate cancer awareness. The night will be hosted by Rex Hunt and Ben Price with all sorts of fun activities on offer for the whole family. Entry is free with action kicking off from 7pm.
