Panther strikes group glory

LP insetLithgow Panther justified favoritism when taking out tonight’s group 3 Sir John Dillon Memorial.

The former New South Wales greyhound was near on last shortly after box rise, he then held his position on the rail with strength and gained an inside run approaching the back. At the top of the home straight Lithgow Panther flew past early leader Secret Spell and excelled away to win by four lengths in a red hot 33.89sec.

Handler and son of trainer Rob Britton, Tim, was delighted after Lithgow Panther’s triumph.

“He’s got a heap of ability – the way he ran home was really impressive,” said Britton.

The win was Lithgow Panther’s 19th from 54 career starts and took his prize money total to $104,566. It was a breakthrough feature win for the son of Milldean Panther and Mrs Tricket, as it was his first taste of group success after falling short in five previous attempts.

Lithgow Panther spent the initial stages of his career under the guidance of John Chapman before transferring to Rob Britton’s kennel.

“He’s been in our kennel for a few months now and he’s really starting to show what he’s capable of.”

Next Sunday’s Sale Cup heats could be the next time we see Lithgow Panther, however Britton was uncertain of any future plans.

“I’m not too sure what’s next for him, I’ll have to ask the boss,” laughed Britton.

Group racing returns to Sandown Park this Sunday afternoon with four semi finals of the Laurels, with the group 2 final to be run Thursday 17 December.
