Metro Wrap: Times and Margins

This week in metro greyhound racing we witnessed some explosive performances including the finals of the Victorian National sprint and distance.

Firstly we rewind the clock to racing from The Meadows on Wednesday. Recapping I thought the win of Evers Bale was outstanding as he stormed home from midfield to win in 30.21 (Replay). The Rob Camelleri prepared chaser looks set to have a highly successful career ahead over the 600m and beyond.

The state’s best sprinters clashed on Thursday night in search of the right to represent Victoria in the National Sprint at Sydney’s Wentworth Park on August 22. The Victorian Sprint final didn’t pan out the way many expected as Ronray Spirit (pictured box 2) kicked up to hold out the mighty Fernando Bale (7) in the run to the first bend. As they went down the back Kayda Shae (1) loomed with a rails run before he copped a bump that I feel cost him the race at a very vital stage, whilst Margins burst through a small gap to claim a running away 29.30 victory by two and a half lengths (Replay). The pin up boy of Australian greyhound racing, Fernando Bale does still gain a start in the Group 1 National Sprint thanks to a well earned wild card entry.

The first on the program on Thursday was won by the promising Yeah Whatever, who controlled the grade six final with an all the way win in 29.55. Other highlights from Thursday included Blazin’ Bomber, who continued his extremely impressive start to his race career with a supremely strong 29.43 win in the third of the night, and also the win of Emrys, who showed uncharacteristic early pace with a 5.02, 18,78, 29.45, to prevail in the FFA.

Saturday night’s racing from The Meadows didn’t disappoint with another phenomenal performance produced by Victoria’s staying sensation, Sweet It Is, who captured the state’s distance final with one of her best performances after early bother. After positioning up near last a mile from the lead with a lap to go, this wonderful chaser stormed home with her trade mark finish to gun down Lady Toy in 42.74. There’s no doubt this dynamic stayer will prove the one to beat in the National Distance final (Replay).

The other of the features on Saturday from The Meadows were claimed by Sweet Barbados all the way in 30.17 (Replay) and Good Judge Buddy, who continued his good run of form for the new kennel with a powerful 30.67 victory from a long way back (Replay).

Sunday’s racing at Sandown Park wrapped up the week of metro racing and the time standard for the 515m was set by Absolute Power in 29.37, living right up to his name. A few roughies saluted as well with three winning in double figures. The widest of those was Herbivorous for Dave Franklin, who railed his way to a half length win in 34.81 at the massive price of $30.10 (Replay).
