Coaches and staff of the Calder Cannons scored their first win on the big stage when the aptly named Calder Cannon took out the GRV to-the-city final at Sandown Park last night.
Cheered on a large crew of syndicate members and supporters track side, Calder Cannon was only moderately away from box eight before navigating his way through the field and going on to win by four lengths in a smart time of 41.90.
Syndicate manager Paul Groves has been involved in greyhound racing since 2008 and last night’s triumph is one he’ll never forget.
“I’ve won some non-penalty races at Sandown on a Sunday but last night was my first full stakes winner, and being a $14,950 final it makes it extra special,” said Groves.
“We bought him at the Ready to Race sales and at that stage he had never had a race start, or had even been named – we didn’t have high expectations for him, just to get him to the track would have been satisfying.”
Groves, a teacher at Salesian College, was an assistant coach at TAC Cup club Calder last year and through the year fellow coaches and staff became interested in getting involved in greyhound ownership.
“They we’re bugging me to get a greyhound for them – a lot of the guys have never been involved in greyhound ownership before.
“Last night was perfect for these first time owners, to be at the track and involved in the Club Challenge all on the same night was just great.”
Although many of the syndicate members are new to greyhound racing, they’re already hungry for more.
“We’ve already purchased a pup, and luckily Calder Cannon’s prize money has paid for him to be educated and cared for up to 20 months of age.
“If Calder Cannon is to win a bit more prize money, which he looks like he might be able to do, these guys will definitely be keen to have another crack at the Ready to Race series.”
Groves has extensive knowledge of the greyhound racing industry, and is open to helping out groups who are interested in getting involved in greyhound ownership.
“I’m open to any footy clubs or any club willing to get involved – I’d be happy to steer them in the right direction.”
